2015

FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 2015

Costume Contest:  This activity begins at 8:00 am in the high school cafeteria.  The high school costume categories include best:  cowboy, cowgirl, senor, senorita, Indian boy, Indian girl, heritage, dance hall girl, mountain man, society belle, and pioneer. The community costume categories include best:  cowboy, cowgirl, senor, senorita, Indian boy, Indian girl, mountain man, dance hall girl, society belle, pioneer, and heritage.  Winners will be asked to wear their costume when receiving their award at the awards ceremony scheduled for 2:00 pm that day.

Queen Contest:  The interviews will be open to the public and will begin at 8:00 am in the high school gym.  The queen will be crowned during the awards ceremony at 2:00 pm that day.  Queen candidates represent each of the four high school classes and are selected by their peers.  The 2015 candidates are:  Rylie Davis, Senior Class; Cara Miller, Junior Class; Dominique Martinez, Sophomore Class; and Kylie Miller, Freshman Class.

Parade:  The parade line-up will begin at 9:00 am west of the high school.  Participants will pick up their number at the tennis courts west of the school.  The parade will begin at 10:00 am and travel from Poplar to 6th Street, from 6th Street to Carson Avenue, from Carson Avenue to 3rd Street, from 3rd Street back to the high school parking lot.  The parade entry deadline is April 20th, 2015.  Please call and let the students know you plan on entering the parade.  All entries must enter prior to the parade in order to participate and be considered for judging.  The winning community float will receive $75.00 and the winning antique vehicle will receive $25.00.  Winners will be honored at the awards ceremony at 2:00 pm that day. 

Chamber of Commerce Downtown Booths, Games, and Contest:  An annual event favorite for many awaiting the parade downtown.  Booths open from 9:00 am until 2:30 pm.  Event will last a little longer in the afternoon this year and have added attractions and entertainment in addition to the booths.  A full schedule of these events will be publicized before the event.  Anyone wishing to have a booth needs to contact the BC/LA Chamber of Commerce at (719) 456-0453 or Teresa Garcia 469-2052.

Art Show:  The Pioneer Historical Society of Bent County and the Bent County Art Guild are planning to have an art show on display Friday and Saturday in the Grand Hall at the John Rawlins Heritage Center in downtown Las Animas.  The Art Show will be open from: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Friday and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday.  Entries will be taken April 8, 9, & 10 and artwork will be judged on April 13th.  The museum will feature unique displays for all to see.  For more information contact the group at 456-6066

Old Time Photo Booth:    at the John Rawlins Heritage Center in downtown Las Animas sponsored by the Pioneer Historical Society of Bent County will be held from 9 am to 4pm all clothing provided.

Boggsville Historic Site:  The Pioneer Historical Society of Bent County will be opening Boggsville for the season April 24th from 12:00 pm to 4:00pm.  If you have any questions contact 456-6066.

Ranch Burger:  The Sophomore class is sponsoring a Ranch Burger lunch that will be held in the high school cafeteria starting at 11:30 am and serving until 1:30 pm.  Cost of the meal is $5.00 per person.  Tickets can be purchased ahead of time or at the door.  For additional information please contact the High School at (719) 456-0211. 

Square Dancing Competition and Awards Ceremony:  The square dancing will begin in the high school gym at 2:00 pm where only Las Animas High School students will be competing.  Directly following the square dance competition is the awards ceremony in which costume winners, parade winners, and the 2015 Queen, and the Santa Fe Trail Day Citizen of the Year will be announced.

Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry Dinner:  The LA Fire Dept. who did this endeavor for the students for many years have retired.  The Chamber of Commerce is assisting the students in having this event.  The Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry Dinner will be at the High School Cafeteria from 4:30 to 7:00pm.  Cost will be $10 per person.  For more information contact the LA-BC Chamber of Commerce 456-0453

Jimmy Jack Whitaker Performance:   periodically during the Oyster Fry at the High School Cafeteria at 5 pm on Friday April 24th. and again at Presbyterian Church 10:30 am Sunday April 26th.  For more information about Jimmy Jack go to whitakermusic.tripod.com.

Seven Falls Indian Dancers:  Sponsored by the Santa Fe Trail Day Student Committee and free to the public the Seven Falls Indian Dancers will be the highlight for this year’s Santa Fe Trail Day.  The performance will feature authentic Indian dances of many different tribes, performed and narrated by tribal members.  For more information contact Teresa Garcia 469-2052. 

Community Dance:  LA FFA will host a community dance to be held at the Las Animas High School from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm in the cafeteria.  Come dance to the music of Fred Darnell and his band.  Sponsored by the Las Animas High School FFA Chapter.  For more information please contact Tim Provost at (719) 456-0211.

SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2015

Tour the Trail Bike Ride:  A 45 mile bike ride to benefit MS.  This event is open to anyone any age.  Registration is at 6:30 am at the Bent County Courthouse parking lot.  Ride begins at 7:00 am.  Water and snacks, support stations, shag vehicles are all provided. Golf Tournament:   The Santa Fe Trail Day Golf Tournament will be held at the Las Animas Golf Course Tee off 9 am.  It will be a three person scramble entry fee is $180 per team.  Handicap based on front 9 play.  Women welcome.    For more information contact Richard Hunt at 469-2221 or at golf course 456-2511.

Horseshoe Tournament:  This event will be at the City Park.  Registration at 1:30 pm  and pitching begins at 2:00 pm.  For more information contact Hayden Marlow at 469-9613.

Bent County Fairgrounds from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.  Ages 5 to 18 competing in most

Jimmy Jack Whitaker Performance:   at Presbyterian Church 10:30 am Sunday April 26th.

Huck Finn Fishing Derby:  Sponsored by the Division of Parks and Wildlife.  This event will be held at the City Pond and begin at 1:00 p.m. with the Fish Identification and Casting Contests.  Fishing contest kids only starts at 2:00 p.m.  Fishing open to the public at 3 pm.  For more information please contact Steve Keefer at (719) 456-0830.

Fun Shoot:  Sponsored by the Las Animas Sharpshooters 4-H Club at the Las Animas Trap Club Lunch at 12:00pm and the games start at 1:00pm.  Annie Oakleys, Ambushes, Buddy Shoots, and other fun games will be played.  Prizes given for special targets.  Bring your gun and have some fun.  Proceeds go to the local youth shooting sports club.
